1- This native Virginia historian and sociologist recently perused an article by Brandee Sanders in "the ROOT" (http: //www.theroot.com/multimedia/lost-black-cities) and about "History's lost Black Towns." Her 29+ listed Black towns have...disappeared from our History annals! And reading more on their earlier towns' backgrounds saddens me....
2) To begin...Google to "History's Lost Black Towns" for the brief intro and list. There, too, you'll find individual websites.
3) One, "Freedman's Village", is in my native Virginia. I have not found the site, but it's on my "to do!" list to visit, explore and photograph.
4) Over the years, on weekends and summers, have explored nearly every cranny and nook in my native Virginia...covered bridges...old diners..."ghost farmhouses"...old farms...standing depots...swinging bridges...BARNS...outbuildings...outhouses...old churches and chapels...moutains...rivers...streams...early lunch counters...more. They have all been listed in my expanding sets of notes and especially PHOTOGRAPHED. At times, will turn the mostly slides into prints for over 170+ published essays in America's oldest newspaper (Virginia Gazette). All given, as a gift, to my Virginia and Williamsburg to "excite" readers to appreciate, maybe even visit, our local and State history!
Also, to help pay for the trips, have published MANY magazine articles across America and the region out and about my Virginia!
5) In particular, some of my neat places to find, explore and photograph out and about my State have been still-standing Black schools and early churches! Often, would find and photograph an existing, rusting cistern pump still standing near the "ghost" school....
6) And why have I devoted so much effort and time to this particular energy? Simple..."THEY DON'T MAKE ANY OF THESE THINGS ANYMORE!!".....hmmmmmm.....
